Thomas Crowder came to Monroe County, Tennessee from Montgomery County, North Carolina around 1823 after being recently widowed. He purchased land on Notchey Creek in 1839 where he erected a large grist mill and saw mill called "Crowder's Mill" or "Hopewell Mill." This stayed in the family until the late 1890's. Thomas and his second wife Mary S. Gharner died only 16 hours apart, Mary on Aug. 27, 1868 and Thomas on Aug. 28, 1868. Thomas was 77 years old. Thomas and Mary along with their son Uriah A. Crowder are buried in the family cemetery, "Crowder Family Cemetery," which in on a bluff overlooking the mill site in the Corntassel Community on Monroe County, Tennessee. The cemetery also contains about 15 fieldstones, one of which says "F.L. Two of the graves marked with fieldstones now have new markers. " |
