Notes for Thomas Crowder, unknown, and Mary Gharner:

• Thomas, recently widowed, came to Monroe Co., TN in or around 1823. He brought his two young sons with him from his first marriage.
• Thomas was a farmer by trade and in 1839, he purchased land on Notchy Creek where he erected a large grist and saw mill called Crowder Mill (click for Photos). This mill stayed in the family until the late 1890's when it was sold. Thomas owned several slaves which he had freed before the Civil War.
• The Crowder Family Cemetery is located on a bluff overlooking the Crowder Mill site in the Hopewell Community of Monroe Co., TN.
• All of Thomas' last five sons were in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Children of Thomas and Unknown Crowder are:

1. James Allen Crowder - born Mar. 1, 1818 married Sarah E. Williams on Aug. 30, 1852. He died in Waco, Texas.
2. Atlas Overstreet Crowder - born Mar. 13, 1820 married first to Sarah Ann Hunt on Sept. 22, 1842 in Monroe Co., TN and second to Nancy Gentry on Jan. 29, 1868.

Children of Thomas and Mary A. Gharner Crowder are:

1. Dr. Alpheus M. Crowder - born in 1826, died on Feb. 19, 1882 at Loudon Station in Loudon Co., TN due to injuries from being fell on by Isaac "Big Ike" Lindsey.
2. Uriah A. Crowder - born in 1828 never married. He was a lawyer in Madisonville, TN and is buried at the Crowder Family Cemetery along with his parents.
3. Dr. Robert Prince Crowder - born on Mar. 11, 1832 at Hally Ferry, Monroe Co., TN, first married Harriet M. McGill on June 28, 1860. She was born on Feb. 20, 1840 and died on Mar. 19, 1872. He married second to Sarah Elizabeth Kimbrough on April 4, 1897. She was born on June 17, 1847 and died on May 25, 1934. She was the daughter of John Mohler Kimbrough (1813-1891) and Mary E. Ragan Kimbrough (1828-1893). Robert, Harriet, and Sarah are buried in the Madisonville City Cemetery, Madisonville, Monroe Co., TN
4. Margaret T. Crowder - born in 1835.
5. Bartley Franklin Crowder - born in 1841 married Eliza Moser on June 12, 1860.
6. Richard F. Crowder - born in 1844.
7. William T. Crowder - died young
8. John W. Crowder - died young

Notes for Atlas O. Crowder, Sarah Ann Hunt, & Nancy Gentry:

• Atlas was known as the "Old Herb Doctor" of Monroe Co., TN.
• The land that Atlas and his family lived on was known as Crowder Fields. He sold it in 1890 to the Babcock Lum. Co.

2. Mary Ann Crowder - married John H. Bowman on Dec. 9, 1866
3. Sarah J. Crowder - married Robert King on Apr. 28, 1870
4. William M. Atlas "Will" Crowder - born Mar. 17, 1856 married Sarah Ann Howard Bright on June 11, 1876

Notes for William and Sarah Ann Howard Bright Crowder:

• William died from complications from a burn he recieved in an explosion.
• Sarah's first husband was Harvey M. Bright. They married on Jan. 18, 1866. Harvey abandoned her and she filed for divorce in 1874.

1. Elbert Crowder - born on Mar. 7, 1877 married Nancy Jane Parks on Dec. 25, 1900.
2. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Crowder - born Feb. 5, 1879 married George Caswell Underwood on Mar. 21, 1915.
3. Martha C. Crowder - born Nav. 12, 1883 married John McKinney
4. Charles A. Crowder - born Sept. 2, 1886 married Hella Givens
5. Mert F. Crowder - born May 1888
6. Iva "Ivy" Crowder - born May 15, 1889 married a Borden
7. Dock Crowder - born Aug. 26, 1891
