Professional Experience

Automation Librarian. South Carolina State Library.
1997 - Present.
Primary responsibility is the maintenance and upgrade of the DRA (Data Research Associates) automation system. The catalog database runs on an Alpha; recently we installed the GUI interface on an NT server. Other responsibilities include maintaining approximately 100 pcs, and a cd-rom server, also on an NT server.

Internship, Cataloging. Thomas Cooper Library, USC.
January 1997 - April 1997.
Primary project: reclassifying European Union documents from local cataloging to LC classification. Knowledge gained of basic cataloging principles, using AACR2Rev, LCSH, LC Classification, MARC, and OCLC. Learned basics of original cataloging, and maintaining authority files. Thomas Cooper uses Notis for the OPAC, and Passport for online access to OCLC.

Graduate Assistantship, Systems Office. Thomas Cooper Library, USC.
May 1996 - May 1997.
As a lab assistant, provided software support to users in computer lab. For Systems Office, handled purchasing and supply requisitions, and assisted the Webmaster with HTML programming. With Support Desk, performed hardware and software installation and troubleshooting for the public workstations in the Columbia campus University Libraries, included installing Windows 95 and building software suites; and installing Passport for technical service workstations.

Internship, MidNet. College of Library and Information Science, USC.
January 1996 - April 1996.
MidNet is the local Community Information Network for Columbia and the Midlands of South Carolina. Duties included working with new information providers to develop web pages, and maintaining the UNIX database of account users.

Presented a workshop showcasing the electronic resources available at Thomas Cooper Library at the University of South Carolina.

Beth Shalom Synagogue, Columbia, SC. 1991-1993.
Secretary to the Rabbi and 1,000 member congregation. Duties included bookkeeping, payroll, and accounts receivable. Maintained life cycle events records for the congregation, and performed general secretarial duties for the Board of Directors. Provided assistance and information regarding Judaism, and facilitated in the synagogue library.

Additional Information

During periods when I was not employed outside of the home, I contracted as a freelance editor, proofreader, and typist/word processor. Contractual work included preparing manuscripts for a novel, book of poetry, a church history, and resumes. I also taught Religious School at Beth Shalom Synagogue, and was a substitute teacher in Sumter School District 2. Volunteer activities included working in school libraries, and managing a religious bookstore.
