Under the limited supervision of the Director, administers the Information Technology Services department. Directly administers, plans and coordinates all aspects of the IT department. Serves as a member of the Leadership Team. Continues to coordinate activities listed below.

 

Coordinator of Network Services

January – June 2004

Coordinates the daily responsibilities of the Network Services Unit. Functions as the key technology advisor to the agency’s Management Team. Serves as the principle liaison to the Deputy Director by assisting in coordinating, monitoring and determining the daily activities/priorities of the Network Services Unit. Responsible for scheduling, preparing agenda and holding regular Network Services staff meetings and for the preparation and submission of Network Services unit monthly reports. Primary responsibility for development of the agency’s annual technology plan and provides consultation and guidance to assist the Deputy Director with the development of technology (i.e., automation, networking and information processing, related training) sections of other agency plans (annual business plan, annual report, accountability report, etc.). Key contact to the agency’s CE Coordinator for the development of technology related training for agency and public library staffs, which includes but is not limited to the agency’s annual Systems Managers’ Exchange. As required, attends Management Team meetings to respond to, report on, or clarify important/essential agency technology issues. Supervises the Information Resources Consultant I position and Web Administrator position. Serves as statewide pubic library coordinator for E-Rate, the Schools and Libraries Division of the Universal Service Support Mechanism.

 

Systems Librarian

1997 – 2004

         

Integrated Library System (ILS) Management: Has major responsibility for integrated library system planning and support. Manages daily operation of the Data Research Associates (DRA)/Sirsi integrated library system. Performs system maintenance, including regular file reorganization and system backups, and monitors data storage status to ensure efficient operation. Performs hardware and software upgrades and installs new and enhanced ILS modules. Evaluates system performance and maintains system security. Generates systems reports. Manages user accounts. Provides staff training and consults with staff on specific system applications. Maintains regular communication with vendor (Sirsi) and subscribes to relevant online discussion groups. (Applies to Sirsi Unicorn, DRA Classic, Web2, and LBPH modules.)

 

Servers and Host Administration: Assists in the installation, monitoring and management, and maintenance of servers and hosts. Establishes and maintains user accounts and rights. Performs backups on regular basis. Monitors security and operating system upgrades and patches and installs such as needed. Assists in monitoring e-mail, print queues, Domain Name System, network management, and firewall.

 

Desktop Computing: Installs and configures desktop computers and laptops. Troubleshoots and maintains PCs. Monitors operating system and security upgrades and patches, and installs as needed. Troubleshoots and maintains application software and peripherals, such as printers and scanners. Supports assistive technology hardware and software.

 

Operating Systems: Experienced in Windows 3.11 – XP; NT, 2000; VMS; UNIX.

 

Supports the functions of the South Carolina Library Network (SCLN) and consults with other libraries and agencies on statewide projects related to library automation, the Internet, and computer technology. Provides hardware and operating system training for public libraries. Provides assistance to public libraries in networking and systems management. Plans and moderates a yearly Systems Managers Exchange. Teaches class in PC Repair and Troubleshooting.

 

E-Rate: Coordinates and monitors E-Rate applications and provides information updates and assistance to South Carolina public libraries. Monitors and communicates changes in the application process and legislation regulating the E-Rate. Tracks technology planning in South Carolina public libraries.

 

Intranet: Developed and manages the library’s staff intranet.

Primary project: reclassifying European Union documents from local cataloging to LC classification. Knowledge gained of basic cataloging principles, using AACR2Rev, LCSH, LC Classification, MARC, and OCLC. Learned basics of original cataloging, and maintaining authority files. Thomas Cooper uses Notis for the OPAC, and Passport for online access to OCLC. January 1997 - April 1997.

Graduate Assistantship, Systems Office

 

As a lab assistant, provided software support to users in computer lab. For Systems Office, handled purchasing and supply requisitions, and assisted the Webmaster with HTML programming. With Support Desk, performed hardware and software installation and troubleshooting for the public workstations in the Columbia campus University Libraries, included installing Windows 95 and building software suites; and installing Passport for technical service workstations. May 1996 - May 1997.

Internship, MidNet

 

MidNet is the local Community Information Network for Columbia and the Midlands of South Carolina. Duties included working with new information providers to develop web pages, and maintaining the UNIX database of account users. January 1996 - April 1996.
