One young father was given the choice to have the day to do what he really wanted to do. For Father's Day he chose to visit the club! Nine year-old Ryan Mays and grandmother, Carolyn Mays were there with Ryan's new McSpadden Ginger dulcimer. Ryan (pictured at right) is the recipient of a Dulcimers for David dulcimer. It's the second one which has been awarded through the program begun by Debbie Porter, a friend of David's from Austin, Texas. All of the proceeds from the sale of the CD, "Dulcimers for David," go to buy dulcimers for children. You can purchase the CD through Debbie's website at debbieporter.net The dulcimers are numbered with D4D... Ryan's is D4D #2. Ryan enjoyed jamming on "that song that has Cabbage in it." We strummed along as he lead us in "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."
Roberta Steinmetz who had never played a dulcimer before, along with young Ryan, joined Sandy for a beginner session. Roberta was playing a beautiful new dulcimer built for her by her husband! Sandy has some neat ideas for ear training.
Naomi Manning spoke with the Club about her new position at the Fort Negley Interpretive Center. Metro Parks has invited the Grand Old Dulcimer Club to move their meetings to the new center when it is completed. Fort Negley was the largest fort built by the Union during the Civil War, and the site has been renovated and updated to make the Fort site educational and accessible. It is located on Fort Negley Blvd. beside the Nashville Sounds Greer Stadium on Chestnut Street. The new building is under construction and will open in late 2007 or early 2008. The center will house interactive displays showing the importance of Fort Negley to the Western Theatre of the War and also discuss and explain the impact of the occupation on Nashville. It will have a theatre/activity room that will seat 60 people. Naomi and her supervisors Paul Widman and Jose Ochoa are pleased that the Grand Old Dulcimer Club is considering relocating to the new center. They feel strongly that the missions of the Club and Metro Parks are compatible, and that the Club will contribute to the overall interpretive theme at Fort Negley. You may find out more about the fort by visiting:
http://www.bonps.org/neg.htm
http://www.tnstate.edu/library/digital/FORT.HTM
We enjoyed learning a new tune, "Walzing Matilda," introduced by Nancy Seifert. Judy Beier shared some of the folklore surrounding this Australian favorite. And many thanks to Zada Law for working out a harmony and the backup chords. We are looking forward to next month's new tune, "Sandy Boys" which will be presented by Sue Claiborne.
(Minutes of the June 17th club meeting submitted by Judy Beier for Flem Smith)
At the July Monday meeting, those present discussed the positive aspects of having scheduled play dates. Some of the ones mentioned were the Labor Day gig in Centennial Park, Music and Molasses at the Ellington Agricultural Center, Carter House in Franklin, Two Rivers Mansion Christmas Open House. There are other opportunities too! Each event needs a coordinator...someone to schedule practices, help create set list, make arrangements with venue, etc. If you would like to volunteer to coordinate a gig, speak up at the regular Sunday meeting.

Editor, Mary Ann Asson-Batres
If you have news and/or photographs for this section of the newsletter, please email them to Mary Ann no later than the first Sunday of each month.
