Update on Club Meetings
Editor, Flem Smith

Minutes of club meeting October 21, 2007
The next Sunday meeting, November 18, 2007, will be at Two Rivers Mansion as usual. The building construction at Fort Negley is nearing completion, and we will know more about our future move by the November meeting.

The Monday meetings were set up by David to help us play better individually as well as helping us play better as an ensemble. Those present at the October meeting want to continue this, and June Geddie and Wanda O'Guin ask us to bring in harmony, chord, etc. parts for songs we already play. June says we can still meet at Belle Meade United Methodist Church. First Monday meetings are still on.

As we continue to get opportunities for small (i.e. part of the club) gigs, we need someone to spread the word, and Nancy Seifert has volunteered. Her notices to us will be by e-mail and the newsletter as appropriate. It's an opportunity to jam together and to showcase the dulcimer to people who may never have seen or heard one.

If you want to form a small group to jam/ practice together beyond the above, please contact Judy Beier. Judy has prepared a list of "satellite" groups that you can find below in the Area Clubs section of the newsletter.

Don't miss the November meeting!! At the November meeting, we will make plans for our Christmas meeting and gig. Several choices have surfaced: (1) We have been asked to play for the Women's Club at Two Rivers. We played for them last year and had a great time. We will not be able to have a dinner afterwards, but will talk about options at the November meeting. (2) There is an opportunity again to be a part of the Franklin Candlelight Tour as we have done in the past. We will discuss this at the November meeting too.

  • Kurt Simerman, a long-time builder of dulcimers from Goshen, Kentucky passed away unexpectedly on November 8, 2007. We at GODC express our sympathy to his family and friends for this sudden and difficult loss. The instruments he created with skilled hands and feeling will preserve his memory in sweet sounds now and for generations to come.
  • There's an interesting piece on YouTube that gives some information about Amazing Grace. You can find it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMF_24cQqT0

  • Dulcimers at Jack and Back

The following note came to Denise Gartin from the Jack and Back festival - "We've raised a total of $557,147.81 - and we're still counting money until November 2! Over 700 cyclists rode that weekend - more than we've had in several years! Thanks to you, Lela, Lori, Eric, and Jean for adding so much to the festivities this year! I can't tell you the number of compliments I received, as well as questions ("What was that instrument they were playing?"). I've even referred a couple of people to the Grand Old Dulcimer Club website.
  • Dulcimer Dandies share music and history at DAR meeting

The Dulcimer Dandies played for the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) on October 19, in Gallatin, TN. They shared information about the history of the mountain dulcimer and the Tennessee form of the dulcimer, the music box.
  • Dixie Dulcimers

On Friday, October 12, the Dixie Dulcimers played for Veterans from Murfreesboro at Cedars of Lebanon Park. Nancy Siefert says, "We just called out songs and jammed. Gene Bond played the banjo and Donna Groome played a guitar. We had some women from Lebanon join us also. Mr. Murphy, a 91 year old veteran, kept saying that he never heard a dulcimer before and that he thought we were awesome! Sue Sutton showed one of the Veterans, who used to be in a string band, that he can play the dulcimer. His daughter, who was with him, said she is going to get him a dulcimer. We played a little, stopped to eat lunch with them, then played until they had to leave. It was very enjoyable."
  • A Very Special Gift

(Above Left) Ann Avrit writes: "My son Matt asked me what I wanted for Christmas last year and I said something to put my 5 dulcimers on so that I could easily pick up any one of the five and play at any time. This is the shelf that he built for me. Next to the shelf is the 2006 Hatch show print that I got from Dulcimer Day. My daughter-in-law had it framed for me."
(Above Right) The Dulcimer Dandies show up every year to play for Pioneer Day at Cedar Grove Elementary School in Smyrna, TN. In attendance this year were Sue Sutton, Robert Brown and Glen Wilson.
