Club News!!
We have a new clubhouse! Beginning in June, the Grand Old Dulcimer Club will be meeting at Two Rivers Mansion on the third Sunday of the month from 2-5. Don't forget the June meeting....June 19. There may be some new players joining us after Dulcimer Day, so if you have an extra dulcimer that you can bring for someone to use, please do! Here we are in May while recording "Gray Cat on a Tennessee Farm" on an Edison Cylinder. Martin Fisher gave us a lesson in history and a great experience recording on the cylinder. We had a special treat on Dulcimer Day. Martin brought us a copy of the recording and we were able to play it for the crowd. And in the crowd was Robert Macon, grandson of Uncle Dave Macon! We'll have copies of the recording for everyone soon!

Another great Dulcimer Day success!! Beautiful weather, great music, delicious food, dulcimers.... what more could anyone want?!?!? Club members looked great in their new T-shirts and everyone's hard work made the day a success. The builders demonstration looked great! We had everything from a Tennessee Music Box to an orange UT dulcimer. Thanks to everyone who helped...performing, demonstrating, teaching, moving chairs, singing, jamming, putting up signs, helping in the hospitality room, and being great dulcimer ambassadors!! Check the Grand Old Dulcimer Club website for more pictures from Dulcimer Day 2005.
- Congratulations to Zada Law and M.J. Brown for completing the Country Music Marathon and Half-Marathon! Club members gathered on Belmont Boulevard to cheer them on. It was so much fun that it will probably become a club tradition! The runners cheered us on as much as we cheered for them and it was a great experience with lots of waving, cheering, thank you's and smiles. Click here for a pdf file with pictures from the day! If you do not have Adobe Reader, you can download a copy free at http://adobe.com
- You don't want to miss Maddie MacNeil and Janita Baker in concert in the Merroll Hyde Magnet School auditorium in Hendersonville on Saturday, June 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 824-8680. Maddie MacNeil lives in the Shenandoah Mountains and is affectionately known as the silver-haired singer with the golden voice! Accompanying herself on hammered as well as mountain dulcimer, Maddie's repertoire includes folk and traditional music, songs by contemporary singer/songwriters, show tunes, jazz pieces, old standards, and arrangements of classical music. From classical to jazz (and everything in between!), her recordings delight listeners everywhere from Virginia to England.Janita Baker, a California resident, has been playing and teaching the mountain dulcimer for over 25 years. Janita is a well-loved teacher and performer who proves that anything can be played on dulcimer, from Joplin Rags to works by Debussy. In 1977, Janita and her husband, Robert, founded Blue Lion Dulcimers and Guitars. They work full-time building instruments which are renowned for their resonance, quality, beauty, and Janita's specialty - exquisite custom inlay.
- Judy Beier has been playing her dulcimer for patients at Skyline Medical Center as a volunteer. If you would like to be part of the Sklyline volunteer program and provide this rewarding service, contact Karen Karpinski at 769-2200 for more information.
- The Dulcimer Dandies presented a concert at the College Grove Senior Center in May (above left). Great job!!!!!
- Thanks to all for the great turn out at the Genealogical Society gig at the State Museum (above right). We had fifteen folks brave the rain, rush hour traffic and downtown parking to make a really fine showing for the GODC.Thanks to David for emceeing us through our paces. We had a real pleasant surprise when Minnie Pearl joined in with us to dance with Old Joe Clark....think it may have been the hit of the evening! Good show!....lets do it AGAIN!
- A bit of interesting trivia from Mary Bufwack/Robert Oermann's Finding Her Voice, Women in Country Music 1800-2000 - "To Willie Spainhour Greer goes the distinction of being the 1920's only commercially recorded Appalachian dulcimer player; she accompanied the ballad singing of her college professor husband Isaac Greer."
- If you missed the T-shirt order before Dulcimer Day, don't worry! Check with Helen Mason at the next Sunday meeting to order yours!
- Donna Harvey's neighbor, Rachel Hoffman, is opening a music school and is looking for someone to teach the dulcimer. This is a paid position. She hopes to open in October 2005. For more details and info, please call 941-4965.
