And the Winner Is!!!
Sarah Musgrave brought home the dulcimer honors from Uncle Dave Macon Days. Sarah finished first in the dulcimer competition with rousing versions of "Gray Cat on a Tennessee Farm" and "Silly Bill." Last year Sarah placed first in the Beginner Musician category and this year moved up in style to the major dulcimer competition besting ten other excellent players! Congratulations Sarah!! Sandy Conatser placed second in that competition playing "Fishers Hornpipe" and "Sweet Hour of Prayer." Ed Newkirk placed second in the dulcimer competition at Bluegrass on the Harpeth in Franklin. Ed says, "I played something slow and pretty, "Danny Boy," which I learned from Lee Rowe. It went a little shakey, but I finished it ok. To my complete surprise I got second place and $25! It was a lot of fun and I can't wait to enter another festival."

Playing Opportunities!!
The Nashville City Cemetery Association is looking for dulcimer players to provide music at their living history tour at the cemetery on Saturday Sept. 29 from 3:30 pm until 8:30 pm. If you think you might be able to play for an hour (or longer!), please email Zada Law and she will help you with arrangements. This is a great opportunity to hone your performance skills. Zada played there last year and had a great time! You only need to know about 3 songs..... because people are walking by you as you're playing -- they might linger for about one song. Happy music, fiddle tunes are great, and slow song are good too! The City Cemetery is Nashville's oldest cemetery, dating back to1822! In the last few years, the City Cemetery Association has worked hard to clean up the cemetery. The living history tour has had good attendance, and dulcimer music is absolutely perfect for this tour. It's a perfect place to promote dulcimer music!

Metro Parks has asked us to provide informal dulcimer music for their Centennial Celebration in the Centennial Arts Center on Saturday, September 15, from 9 until 5 and Sunday, September 16, from noon until 5. We will be scattered throughout the exhibit area and can choose the times we want to play. There will be no central stage, so the schedule is completely flexible. You can volunteer at the August meeting and we will also discuss the possibility of moving our September meeting location to the Centennial Arts Center so that we can all participate on Sunday. Metro Parks is very generous to us during Grand Old Dulcimer Day, and this is an opportunity for us to say "Thank You!" and support their other programs as well. If you cannot come to the August meeting and would like to play either day, please email Sandy.

Upcoming Events...Mark Your Calendar!!
The Ala-Sippi Dulcimer Association's Fall Dulcimer Day will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 19 & 20, 2001 at Tishomingo State Park near Tishomingo, Ms. just off either the Natchez Trace or Highway 25 - from our area, the Trace is a beautiful drive!! After the pot luck dinner on Friday evening, a great jam session is held in the lodge until about 9:30 pm. Saturday morning is devoted to shopping, playing, renewing old friendships - with the stage performances starting at noon.

The Great River Road Festival will be held August 24-26 at the Pere Marquette Lodge near Grafton, IL. Visit their website for information....great festival....David Schnaufer, Stephen Seifert, and Tull Glazener will be teaching and performing and rumor has it that the Nashville Dulcimer Quartet will be there too!!

Welcome New Members!!!

We were happy to welcome Denise Coss (center) back to our July meeting! Denise has been studying with David at the Blair School of Music and he sent her in our direction! New members Donna Harvey (left) and Beck Wynne (right) were with us for the first time. Donna found us through our website and Becky came to Grand Old Dulcimer Day, bought a dulcimer and became a player!!! We're happy to have them add their talents to our group!!

For the last two meetings we have used a new format which seems to be working well. After the sharing circle we break up into pairs, trios, groups...whatever fits the need for the day. Each of us finds someone with whom to swap a tune or who will teach us something specific we want to know. Later, we come back together and jam for about an hour and use part of that time to practice and reinforce our club tunes. Never know when we might have a gig!!!

Don't Forget the August Meeting!
