Club News!!
It was if the planets had aligned themselves at the July meeting! We had
the pleasure of having David Schnaufer, Lee Rowe, Steve Seifert and Donovan
Carpenter all under one roof and leading us in one of the best sessions we can
remember! They led us through our July brushup songs "Waterbound" and "Fly Around
My Pretty Little Miss" and helped us fine tune "Old Molly Hare" and we had an
especially great time with "Sally Ann" ( please let us know if you know the
traditional lyrics to "Sally Ann" ). We cajoled our own "Fab Four" into a tear-em-up
version of Black Mountain Rag and they didn't disappoint us ....it was great
guys!
We also enjoyed the company of folks from the Knoxville Area Dulcimer
Club..Anne Marie Begley, KADC Pres., Fred Woods and family - Katie,Louise and Richard,
Phylliss Brown and Linda Long. Their hammered dulcimers added a lot to the overall sounds of the day. We were treated to a beautiful rendition of Simple Gifts with tin whistle accompaniment. Thanks for coming ...come back soon!
The OAPs struck again and the original Fab Four probably turned over....but whatever....looked like they had fun with "When I'm 64."
We had a great house concert/workshop/potluck/jam with Debbie Porter on Sunday, August 3. Debbie taught three Carter Family tunes - "Keep on the Sunny Side,"Give Me the Roses While I Live," and "Happiest Days of All". Seventeen club members attended and picked up some great tips as well as the new songs. We enjoyed her concert and sang along with many of the songs she performed. She entertained and inspired us with her dulcimer, ukelele, and voice. Debbie is from Texas and comes to Nashville about twice a year to visit and record. We all hope to see her again! We've all made a new friend!
Nancy Seifert won first place in the Kentucky Music Weekend Dulcimer Duet Competition with Joe Collins as her duet partner. Congratulations, Nancy!
For the August meeting, those who attended Debbie's workshop might want to share a song they learned. Also, let's brush up on Soldier's Joy. If anyone who attended Neal Walters' workshop last year has found a song from his teaching that has been especially fun to play, share it too and we can add it to our club repertoire.
The social break was great fun...lets do it again...Glen will bring some stuff and any additions would be welcome...just easy finger stuff ...nothing elaborate.
Marilyn Konruff is the proud owner of a Homer Ledford dulcimer which came to her in an interesting way through a neighbor. We've missed Mountain Laurel at our monthly meetings, but they've been busy playing and promoting the dulcimer. They will be playing daily at the Wilson County Fair August 15-23 at the Fiddler's Grove church. Stop by and see them and join in some gospel tunes! We look forward to seeing them when the festival schedule slows down and Marilyn can bring the Ledford dulcimer and share her story!
Sandy is working as the Interim Volunteer Coordinator at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and would love to talk to you about volunteer opportunities there. It's a great way to see the museum, learn about country music, and meet new people. The opportunities range from being a tour guide or a Museum Ambassador who greets and assists visitors, to computer, research and clerical assistance. Don't worry if you don't think you're a country music expert, they'll teach you! Gloria Kirkland is a volunteer guide and you can ask her about it too!!Email Sandy if you're interested!
