Club News!!
- We closed out the year on the best possible note with a great club performance at Traveller's Rest. Our group songs were combined with ensemble performances by the Tuesday Nighters, Zada & Kort, Mary Lawrence & David, and Sandy & David. The performance was part of the Twelfth Night celebration at Traveller's Rest. This was our second club performance at this venue this year. Mountain Laurel continued their tradition with a performance on Sunday afternoon.
- Don't miss the January meeting on Sunday, January 20, 2-5!! If the weather stays good we will be having some special surprise guests!!!! Be There!!
- Glen has had several requests for the folding music stands which the Tuesday nighters use. Glen is the builder and the cost is $15.00. He builds the wooden stand and you supply the fabric. A kitchen dish towel works fine...pick one you really like!! For information, give Glen a call or check with him at the next meeting.
- There is more dulcimer tab on the web. Click here for tab from the Knoxville club in pdf format.
- Michelle Nikolai has found another great opportunity that might interest our group for performances. There is a new spot in Murfreesboro for performances run by Murfreesboro Metro Parks and Recreation. The series, called "Backcountry Gigs," happens on Saturday nights, early (like 5-7 p.m.), at the Barfield Crescent Park canteen, called the Wilderness Station. This would be a fun spot for small ensembles to play and it's a great way for us to get more "performance savvy" in front of a small audience. They also have informal "jams" on Sundays, and I was told they get about a dozen old timers
who do this. The coordinator is Deborah Paschall, and she was really interested in our group. It's up to us to contact her and arrange to play. This could be an ongoing thing throughout the spring/summer and lot of fun. We'll talk about it and Michelle will provide more information at the January meeting.
- We've missed Mountain Laurel at our last few meetings but they have been busy folks!! We received this message from them and are looking forward to their return next month!..... "Mountain Laurel is alive and well and living temporarily in Mesa,AZ! We have four gigs here, two performances and two as entertainment for potlock dinners which, incidentally, are huge. They tell us us one will have over 200 people! Most of the "snowbirds" here are from the midwest and Canada so we are having a lot of fun talking about the origin of the mountain dulcimer as they have never seen such an instrument before! We've also done some sightseeing and the weather has been great (70's)! We hope to be back for the February meeting and looking forward to seeing everyone again. There will probably be a lot of new faces for us!"
You will recognize some familiar faces in this photo from the Student Dulcimer Recital at Blair on December 20. David's students made him proud playing everything from classical pieces to jazz!

Don't forget!! January Meeting Sunday, January 20 Priest Lake Presbyterian Church See You There!!!
|
The Grand Old Dulcimer Club meets on the third Sunday of each month at Priest Lake Presbyterian Church on Smith Springs Road. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome. Special attention is given to beginning musicians! Smith Springs intersects with Bell Road north of I-24 and south of I-40. Turn east, and the church is approximately 3/4 mile ahead on the right.
In partnership with Metro Parks, The Grand Old Dulcimer Club sponsors Grand Old Dulcimer Day each year in May at Two Rivers Mansion.
The club and its members perform at festivals and civic events and often take their music into special needs facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes, and other care facilities.
