Greifenburg

Greifenburg lies in the west of Kaernten (in the south of Austria) on the south side of the Alps. Due to the topography of the area and local weather conditions, cross country flights lasting for several hours are the norm in the summer months. This also means this area is often flyable when many sites in other parts of Europe are not.

The thermals start early and last into the evening, with cloudbase often over 3500m.The take-off is very safe with the wind pulled up the launch by the higher peaks behind it. There are many landing fields throughout the valley and they are flat and open. The road runs the length of the valley, making it easy for retrieve.

For the rest of the family there is much to do, from swimming in the lake right by the landing field, to cycling for miles. The area and the mountains are very pretty and are criss-crossed by paths for walking, often with excellent Alms for refreshments along the way. In the case of bad weather rafting is available or it is worth taking a 10km trip the to the highest bathing lake of the alps, the Weissensee. The nearby towns of Lienz and Spittal have a variety of shops, cafes and sights to see.
